According to the guidelines recently released by the government, it has been clearly communicated that if consumers fail to pay utility bills such as electricity, water, and gas, legal actions, asset seizure, and service disconnection will be imposed.
The central government has drafted new guidelines in collaboration with utility service providers to address the growing problem of delayed consumer bill payments. According to these guidelines, services will be suspended for consumers with arrears exceeding three months, notices will be sent to repay the debt, and ultimately legal measures will be imposed. Additionally, if arrears exceed 90 days, service companies can file a court case to collect the debt, which can trigger penalties such as asset seizure, wage garnishment, or bank account seizure.
These guidelines are viewed as measures taken to address situations where services continued despite arrears, and also to resolve delays in legal processes even when attempts were made to settle the debt. If consumers fail to pay on time, they may face not only service suspension but also long‑term impacts such as a drop in credit score and future restrictions on loans or services. Therefore, experts advise paying arrears on time or seeking payment arrangements to avoid these negative consequences.
