Telangana Records 95% Rainfall Deficit in October; Hyderabad Sees 97% Shortfall
Hyderabad: Hyderabad and several districts of Telangana are experiencing a severe rainfall deficit during the ongoing North-East monsoon season, raising concerns over weather conditions in the remaining days of October.
According to rainfall data, Telangana received only 3.5 mm of rainfall between October 1 and 21, against the normal of 75.6 mm, resulting in a 95% deficit.
Hyderabad Records 97% Rainfall Deficit
Hyderabad recorded just 2.8 mm of rainfall during the first 21 days of October, compared with its normal monthly rainfall of around 114 mm, marking a 97% deficit.
The city witnessed significantly different rainfall patterns in previous years. Hyderabad received 400.7 mm of rainfall in October 2020, while the total stood at 37.1 mm in October 2016.
Several districts, including Hanumakonda, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Mancherial, Medak, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Sangareddy and Siddipet, recorded no rainfall between October 1 and 21.
Other districts also experienced rainfall far below their normal levels.
Wanaparthy Records Highest Rainfall Among Districts
Wanaparthy recorded the highest rainfall among Telangana districts during the period, receiving 17.7 mm. However, this was still 78% below its normal rainfall of 82.1 mm.
Khammam received 13.8 mm against its normal of 94.6 mm, while Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri recorded 13 mm compared with its normal of 84.6 mm.
El Niño Raises Weather Concerns
The possible influence of El Niño has raised concerns about rainfall patterns across Telangana.
El Niño is a climate phenomenon associated with the abnormal warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It can influence atmospheric circulation and alter rainfall and temperature patterns in different parts of the world.
Depending on its strength and duration, El Niño can contribute to drier conditions in some regions and heavier rainfall in others. Its potential effects on agriculture and water availability remain important considerations as Telangana experiences a significant rainfall shortfall.
With October typically being one of the wetter months in Telangana, the substantial rainfall deficit has drawn attention to the state's weather conditions during the remainder of the month.
