Hyderabad: The iconic clock tower at Moazzam Jahi Market in Hyderabad has reportedly stopped working for the past few days, raising concerns among local residents.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which is responsible for maintaining the historic structure, has reportedly not identified when or how the clock stopped functioning.
Goshamahal Executive Engineer Shivanand said the department had not received any complaint regarding the issue. He added that action would be taken once a complaint was received.
History of Moazzam Jahi Market
Moazzam Jahi Market was constructed between 1933 and 1935 during the reign of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. The market was named after Prince Moazzam Jah, the second son of Osman Ali Khan and president of the City Improvement Board.
The market was developed as part of the board’s urban renewal initiatives. It was intended to provide a commercial space between Hyderabad Railway Station and the British Residency.
Historic Market Restored in 2020
Over the years, the historic market suffered deterioration due to water seepage, rusted beams and encroachments.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), along with the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department, undertook restoration work to preserve the heritage structure.
Following the restoration, the market was reopened to the public on August 15, 2020.
The reported clock malfunction has once again drawn attention to the maintenance of the historic landmark and the need to preserve Hyderabad’s architectural heritage.
